X4 crashes computer every time any you attempt to open of the WPO programs

X4 programs have all worked fine since I purchased and installed it on my computer......until now. I just installed the latest patch for Microsoft Vista and now whenever I attempt to open any of the WPO programs my computer locks up and I have to do a forced shut down by holding down the power button until the computer shuts down and then I have to reboot.

I uninstalled X4 and reinstalled X3 with the same results. I attempted to revert back to previous settings and my computer won't do this. I get an error.

Anyone else having this problem?

This is a long story, but I shall very much appreciate if someone bothers to read it and can give me advice on how to get on.

Recently, when attempting to edit a picture in a WP document, up came a note reporting some failure in WP Presentations which made it impossible to edit the picture. Well, I thought, now I have to repair my installation, and for that purpose I open my Control Panel and click on Programs and Features. To my dismay I do not find any entry for WordPerfect in the list of installed programs.

The next thing I tried was to download and try to install an installation package from the site I was directed to when I purchased the WPX4 upgrade in November 2009. This installation was aborted due to an error. I did not write down the details. I tried this wice.

Now, I have a program called "Perfect Uninstaller ". Thinking that I might get going if I completely removed my WP before reinstalling, I used Perfect Uninstaller to remove all WP components reported by it.

After downloading WPX4 once more from the site mentioned above I started the installation process. When the installer reports 5% complete a WordPerfect Office X4 window appears saying "1: Skins_EN.msi: This installation cannot be run directly launching the MSI package. You must run setup.exe." Clicking the OK button then ends the installation. What can I do?

My system is a DELL Vostro 1000 laptop with Windows Vista and 2GB of memory. My hard disk has 38 GB free.

I am having exactly the same trouble for the same reasons. An older trial copy of X4 does not seem to have uninstalled fully so the purchased copy from Corel gets Error 1714 at 5% into installation and bails out.

I have searched and cleared every entry for WordPerfect Office X4 in the registry and cleared all directory folders of the program but all to no avail.

Have you managed to find out where this info is hiding? Or can anybody else help.

I am having the same problem: after 2 days using the 30-day trial version WP x4 freezes when 1) I try to save a file 2) I try to print a file and 3) I try to make a pdf of the file. I am running XP (on a Boot Camp partition on my MacBook Pro). I have tried your proposed solution, but it does not work. Has anybody who follows this thread come up with any other suggestions?

I replaced my computer and attempted to install WPX4 on the new one using the same disk as before -- this time on an HP computer running XP Pro SP3, Intel processor. Every time I click on the WordPerfect icon on the first install screen, the computer immediately reboots. Tried it in both DVD drives, same result. All other software has installed without a hitch. Any ideas for what's happening? (This is the academic discount version, so there is no free tech support.) I have installed WPX3 in the meantime, and it runs perfectly. Thanks.

SIMPLE FIX FOR MAJOR CRASH AND FREEZE PROBLEM

MAJOR CRASH/FREEZE PROBLEM SOLVED

Problem:    Routine freezing, crashing of WordPerfect when attempting to save a document.

System Info:    Vista (64 bit) with WordPerfect Office X3 (version 13.0.0.565)

Fix:        Start WordPerfect. Select Settings... under the Tools menu. Select Files... Uncheck the “Use enhanced file dialogs” box. Click OK. Click Close.

I have used the same software with Windows XP and never had the problem. After switching to Windows Vista (64 bit), WordPerfect Office X3 was installed using normal installation (i.e., not a custom install). Everything worked fine for about a week until attempts to save a document started to crash WordPerfect. Within a few days, virtually every attempt to save document caused a crash. Even if re-opened with a backup copy appearing, the backup copy could not retained.

I spent hours scouring the Internet and Corel sites for a resolution. I found a lot of crash issues and fixes , but not much on saving a document killing the program. Then I found the following:

    WARNING - Enhanced File Dialogues do not work under Wine

    By default, WordPerfect uses 'enhanced' (Explorer-like) file dialogues. These do not work under Wine. WordPerfect will probably crash opening an existing document or saving a new document unless the enhanced dialogues are disabled first.

    Start WordPerfect. Select Settings... under the Tools menu. Select Files... Uncheck the “Use enhanced file dialogs” box. Click OK. Click Close.

I had no idea what “Wine” meant, but by that point I would have tried stuffing a dead albatross in the tower if someone said it would work.

Having nothing to lose by trying it, I went ahead and so far it has worked like a charm and apparently the same simple fix has resolved a lot of other crash issues related to opening, closing, and saving.

One computer has the X4, another is on x3, etc.

It crashes as described above. It is WORSE after installing the X4 "hotfix" - it errs and shuts down immediately instead of pretending it might let you work! The Hotfix is NOT listed separately so cannot be "uninstalled" with Windows. Most of our files are text. We have one very large file of data that we had to use in Word while trying to fix WP, and we can no longer open it in WP.

We do have network printers but each computer has its own local printer as well.

WordPerfect X4 Toolbar disappeared

The WordPerfect X4 Toolbar disappeared and I’m getting an error.

Has this happened to anyone else? This is the error.

Error

Cannot create graphics object (GDI).

The most probable reason is insufficient memory.
