I have noticed that in WP 4x, when I am using an index, the hyphen shows up ONLY IN THE INDEX as a code rather than a hyphen.  Can anyone tell me how to make a hard hyphen that shows us as a hard hyphen in the index?  In the body of the document it shows up as a hyphen.  As an example, chile-rubbed looks like that within the document, but when the index is printed out, it looks like chileUrubbed.  Not really acceptable!  Thank you.

Hi,

  1. Use Find & Replace > Match Codes
    • Find [-Hyphen] and replace with [-Hyphen Character]
    • Then Replace All or Find Next to replace as desired.
  2. You will have replace the Index tag for all instances where you have changed the hyphen character
    • If you build your index with hyperlinks you can find them quickly
    • With reveal codes on, click on the Index tag to see the contents
    • Delete the offending tag and replace with a new one using  the mark button on the Index tab of the Reference Tools dialog
  3. The bad hyphen shows up as a Euro symbol on my machine.  Every bit as ugly when it is not wanted.

David, thanks for the info!  I did as you suggested, but figured there MUST be a better way.  So, after experimenting, I found an easier way to eliminate all of that ... by using CTRL + -  instead of just the regular [- hyphen] .  This prevents that unwanted symbol instead of the hyphen in the index.  Problem resolved.

And yes, in the Reveal Code, that hyphen showed as a Euro symbol, but in the actual index, it showed as that squared-off U.

Thanks again for you quick response.

Hi Kate,

In the back of my mind I knew about the CTRL+ - but I could not find it when I responded earlier.  Thanks for the reminder.

David
