How do I get a soft return to left justify. A hard return goes all the way to the left, but the soft return lines up with the first letter of the first line, which I don't want.

Are you sure that the return isn't lining up with the current line indent setting? Check Format - Paragraph - Format settings. If everything is correct here, check your hidden codes for "Hd Left Ind". It sounds like you want to delete this code.
