I'm laying out a book using WP, and everything is turning out beautifully. The ONE sticking point is the fact I cannot figure out how to get page numbers into the header starting about 7 pages in, but starting AT # 1. It defaults to 7 no matter what I try. I cannot start the page numbering on page 1 because that's the title page. The BOOK itself doesn't start until pg 7. GAH!

Any tips for me? This is my first time actually using WP to layout a book. Most people I talk to use Word, but I consider that program to be an abomination, so I'd much rather just know if there is a way to do this using my beloved WP.

Any help is appreciated.

You're SO close - just one tiny little step and you'll be good to go. When you insert the page number, click the Set Value button to open the Values dialog box. Type the number, in your case, "7" and OK out.

Let us know if this takes care of things for you! :)

Sounds so simple, and I thank you for the reply! However, there is no "set value" option for me. I'm putting this in the header, that seems to be a big problem.

The steps I take to get the page numbers in the header (already existing with author name and book title):

Format, Page, and the ONLY options available are "Page Setup" and "Insert Page Number", everything else is grayed out.

I choose "Insert Page Number" and I get a very simple, small box with numbering choices, but no button to "set value". If I choose "Page Number" from this simple box, the value is automatically set to 7 (because the story starts on page 7) but I need it to say 1, since it is the FIRST page of the story itself. (The previous pages are title page, copyright info, and dedications.)

If I click within the document itself (not the header) I am able to use the more complex page numbering options, including the "set value" button. This is not good for what I need to do though, because the author wants the page numbers at the TOP inside the header. Is there a way to do this?

I remembered something from my SEUsing book and there *is* a trick to this. I don't have time to test, but here is what I have as a tip in the SEU WPOX3 book:

"When you're working in a header or footer, the Numbering option on the Format, Page menu is gray and there is no Value/Adjust under Insert Page Number. So, how are you supposed to adjust the page number in a header or footer? First, insert the page number in the header or footer. Switch back to the document window and choose Format, Page, Numbering. Change Position to No Page Numbering, then click Set Value and change the page number there. Click OK twice to get back to the document."

Let us know. :)

You don't actually have to start in the header or footer.  You can start in the body of document on the page where you want the numbering to start. On the Menu select Format >> Page >> Numbering... to bring up the Page Numbering Format dialog box.  From there you can pick the position, format, font related attributes and set the starting value.

Yes, I know that. However, the author requires the page number to be IN the header.

In my opinion dwc_2020’s suggestion is the best way to handle page numbers of a document.  It is quick.  It is easy.  Also, if the user selects the TOP RIGHT, TOP LEFT, or TOP CENTER under POSITION, the page number will appear in the header and not the body of the document.

This is where ALT+F3 comes in handy–one can see where the notations are located.  Ideally, in my opinion, changes like this should be at the top of a document rathr than somewhere internally in a document.  One doesn’t have to remember to do a find to locate if changes are needed.

That wasn't working for me, which is why I came here to ask the question in the first place. Laura's suggestions were spot on and the page numbers ended up exactly where my client wanted them to be, and it was very low fuss.

Let me try.  On the page that you want to be page 1, go to Format, Page, Numbering, and then click on the "Set Value" button.  That has always worked for me.  Anything before that will be numbered.  So you might want to start your header on that page and have no page numbering before that page.

I was looking at WordPerfect X3 for the labels, but they should be the same for WordPerfect 11.  At the moment I do not have a box with WordPerfect 11 on it.

As I've said, Laura Acklen's advice was spot on and timely. There really is no need for more suggestions. She nailed it.
