One computer has the X4, another is on x3, etc.

It crashes as described above.  It is WORSE after installing the X4 "hotfix" - it errs and shuts down immediately instead of pretending it might let you work!  The Hotfix is NOT listed separately so cannot be "uninstalled" with Windows.  Most of our files are text.  We have one very large file of data that we had to use in Word while trying to fix WP, and we can no longer open it in WP.

We do have network printers but each computer has its own local printer as well.

I wish there were a box to check so that I could indicate I too was having repeated problems with WPX4 (with Vista) crashing.  Instead, to get Corel to move on this, it appears from this forum that I need to undertake an extensive analysis of what happens prior to the crashes--with every possible variable and contributing factor.  I'm not capable of that.  I'm just a moderately savvy user who used to love and openly advocate WP.  Several things have changed:  Repeated crashes, arrogant support staff, charging for any support whatsoever, and the expectation that users have degrees in computer science and the time to troubleshoot the crashing problem.    I have been with WP since early WP days (1993?).  I will not switch to Word.  I am considering OpenOffice which we have on two other computers.  But what would I do without Reveal Codes?

>> I had the same problem with WP X3

FWIW, I've been running X3 (on XP) on 3 different computers since it came out and rarely have problems - and I work with pretty complex docs withchanging headers, footers, hyperlinks, bookmarks, graphics, tables  and used within a complex documt assembly macro suite I've developed.

I'll be happy to send a copy of a representative document should anyone want to take a look

I would like to see how you do it.  I run X4 on both XP and Vista (at home) and have my backup set for 1 minute intervals to protect myself from near daily losses.  Thanks.

It just happened again!  But it's understandable.  I was doing something quite radical and one that would stress any program:  I.e., saving a two-page document with a table.  OMG, how audacious of me!

Interesting that one poster said it only happens on his new HP desktop. I am using X4 on a new HP 4710s and it crashes often, but only when I am moving or editing a graphic -- big or small. I waste half my time closing and reopening the program and recreating my past work, which means I must schedule X4 to do timed backups literally every 60 seconds in order not to lose work when it crashes.

I use Windows XP Pro SP3, have 3GB of memory, a 320 GB HDD and a separate 512MB ATI graphics card. This shouldn't happen. No weird stuff on computer. I tried closing MS Outlook, which is usually always open, as suggested, but it didn't help.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the program, still no help. (This happened with XP3 as well, but not with the prior version.)

This is a problem that I have had since migrating to Win7. I had been using X3 and then when my machine crashed EVERY time I tried to print on a networked or wireless printer. Corel told me they would not help me unless I upgraded to X4. Well here I am, X4 and STILL I have the same problem with networked printers.

1.. Your "build" of WordPerfect, as shown in Help, 14.0.0.667

2. Exactly what you have tried so far. Installed X4, cleared spooler

3. Whether this happens on one computer or all computers at your location, only with Win7 computers. OTHER PROGRAMS PRINT FINE. Crash occurs on start-up IF a networked printer is installed. If I uninstall the network printer, WPX4 starts and runs fine.

Me too, since at least 5, I think I was using 4 in DOS. I had to downloadd and use the Open Org Writer to finsish a project I had to get out. I love Word Perfect and I Love Reveal Codes; But I am thinking at long last I need to make a change. I can't afford the hours I keep having to spend to get Word Perfect running. I have reviewed all these posts and replies and I still don't see an easy fix. One fellow told me to rename  the Startup template; But I can't find it it X4.

Oh Well!

Onward and Upward,

Don

In wp, your default template's path and name are shown in Tools > Settings > Files > Template.  I am surprised that you don't know that since you have used wp so long.

I am not surprised seeing so many problems with wp in Win7.  Count on Microsoft to change basic operating system functions.  You can also blame printer manufacturers for not making their print drivers like they use to.  They design them for MSOffice applications so they could care less about other applications that depend on their drivers.  With Win7 being so new, few beta testers have time to explore all of the problems.  The way wp works is that if ANY print driver has any issue, it will not work as it is designed to show you What You See Is What You Get.  The first step is to install a driver that you know will work, not a network driver.  Some printer issues can be resolved by doing what this Corel's support link says to try:  http://corel.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/corel.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=754014

When ALL other programs print FINE (and I have a lot of different programs) and ONLY X4 and X3 cause the computer to crash when printing on networked or bluetooth printers.... I wonder WHICH company really has a problem???

I have used WP since DOS... but Corel has not followed through on the excellent customer service that it's previous owners had. Very disappointing to tell customers to go find the solution in some obscure spot on their website rather than IMMEDIATELY issuing a patch and sending it out.... very, very disappointing.

Oh and BTW.... I had already found and followed and DID all the "suggestions" from Corel's posting that you cited.

And one more BTW, there is nothing called "Startup template" in file settings-templates. there is "Default" template folder and Default template, but that is all. and exactly HOW would one change that template? and to what? and why in the world would that have an effect on a networked printer? and how would that be microsoft's error and not Corel's? (and I am NO fan of MS, which is why I have always tried to stay with WP)

Oh, yes.... and I went to Corel's website to download a printer driver... isn't THAT supposed to work?

If you still think it's a printer driver you might try downloading CutePDF, a pdf writer installed as a printer. http://www.cutepdf.com/products/cutepdf/Writer.asp.

This thread is too long so what I say may apply to one user and not another.  It is best to start your own thread.  With the plethora of printers, operations systems, 32 bit versus 64 bit, AMD versus Intel processors, wp major version and patch versions and such, problem solving becomes difficult.  A rule-of-thumb, if a thread has not seen a post in 2 weeks, consider it dead.  There are many reasons why X4 could crash.

As I can't see over your shoulder, I have to give general tips.  At wpuniverse.com, we ask that users tell us their operating system and wp version.  The wp version is in wp's Help > About.  Basically, before trying anything be sure that wp is fully patched.  WPU's FAQ forum lists all the versions and patches.

As for the template issue Tom, take my word for it that startup template=default template.  Renaming it with wp closed will cause wp to create a new one if it can't find the old one.  While it is not something that will solve printer issues, it will solve some startup issues sometimes.

As for the print driver issue, you must understand that wp makes heavy use of the print driver unlike "other" programs.  As such, print driver issues may only show in wp.  With Win7 being new, printer manufacturer's have to update their print drivers.  So, go to the vendor's site to install the latest driver is what Corel's FAQ that I referenced explained.  Obviously, Corel has no control over printer drivers so looking for a print driver at their website would be futile.

WP must have a physical printer installed.  As I explained and in the Corel article, try installing the Apple Laser Writer printer.  Set the port to print to file. Another thing to try would be to set wp's Settings, to not convert a file to the default printer on open.  If your network or printer is not connected, that setting would be one way to get into problems like what you saw.  See Tools > Settings > Environment .  I also set it to not use printer metrics in Tools > Settings > Convert.

My suggestions are just that.  I don't have Win7 nor do I have your printer.  I know our IS people decided to surplus old printers because of print driver issues in XPPro where they worked fine before a Windows patch to XPPro.
